Coleman A. Young, who was elected the first Black mayor of Detroit in 1973 and went on to serve as mayor for a record 20 years recently died in Detroit's Sinai Hospital. Young was 79.
The cause of death was respiratory failure, officials said.
Young had been in intensive care since July 24. He suffered a cardiac arrest Nov. 12 and was in a coma on a ventilator after he was resuscitated. He had advanced emphysema and was hospitalized several times in recent years for heart and respiratory problems.
