Heather Dubrow's new book brings a generous critical approach to the venerable topic of Petrarchism. Her aim is to isolate what she terms the "counterdiscourses" of the Petrarchan mode and to analyze them in the context of early modern English poems. She replaces the usual term "anti-Petrarchan" with the notion of a counterdiscourse as a "term meant to apply to a range of reactions against a dominant discourse" (8).
