Martin Luther King III, son of the slain civil rights leader, was unanimously elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He'll take office in the Atlanta-based organization Jan. 15, his father's 69th birthday.
The civil rights organization was co-founded by King's late father, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 40 years ago. King served as the group's first president from 1957 until his assassination in 1968.
