Is the right of free speech special?

Free speech is a right that should be held in regard above all others because its existence allows for a diminishing of the differences of opinion between the people and the state about the government's right to control a person's liberty. Without laws and court decisions supporting freedom of speech, other rights could be violated. Legislation confining the speech of some to protect the rights of the many needs to be clear and precise to avoid the temptation of limiting free speech. The basic approach to free speech of the U.S. Supreme Court is therefore justified.
