The Shakers founded South Union, KY, in 1807 when they were looking for new settlements in northeastern US. Jean Burks noted a direct correlation between the town's architecture and furnitures which exhibit a unique culture of godly perfection, simplicity and order.

When the Shakers sent missionaries from their outposts in the northeastern United States to seek new locations further west, they founded seven communities in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky between 1805 and 1822.
