Thomas Pynchon's 'V' used a British propaganda pamphlet about a genocide conducted by Germany in South Africa after an unsuccessful revolt in 1904 as its central source. Pynchon rewrote the official, British interpretation of these events in such a way as to question the value of interpretation and to be wary of official accounts as a source for historical truth. Pynchon's novel shows he is more interested in the possibilities of interpretation than in a single version of fact.
