Efforts to preserve Essen's industrial past in Ruhr valley have prompted the conversion of Zollverein XII coalmine complex to house German Design Centre. The Centre has then became the venue for temporary and permanent industrial design exhibitions. The conversion focused on the boiler house where the interiors of four solid brick broilers have been transformed to accommodate two levels of gallery space.
