Richard Sampson, his "Oratio," and Henry VIII's royal supremacy.

The 1533 'Oratio' of Richard Sampson is significant as an apology for the royal supremacy of Henry VIII, with a distinctiveness that has not been fully appreciated. Because Sampson was not primarily a theologian, it is misleading to view his 'Oratio' as a theological work. Sampson's work was based more on law than on theology. Sampson's 'Oratio' was among the earliest supremacy apologies, for which he drew on sources in the New Testament, history and natural reason.
