There is a growing band of people, mainly in the US and Britain, who want to remove the apostrophe from the English language. They claim "it serves only to annoy those who know how it is supposed to be used and to confuse those who dont (sic)".

They claim (see www.killtheapostrophe.com) that those who defend traditional apostrophe usage are unthinking and stubbornly believe "Its right because its right".
