Oregon Switching Yard May Be Derailed by Union Pacific Changes.(Originated from The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.)

Oct. 15--Union Pacific Corp., the largest railroad in Oregon and the nation, is facing a systemwide freight jam of epic proportions.

Deliveries are running weeks late, especially in the West and Gulf Coast regions. Loads have been "lost," at least as far as UP's computers are concerned, for days. Some firms, starved for raw materials, have curtailed operations or shut down; elsewhere, manufactured goods are piling up for want of railcars to take them away. Several of UP's largest customers have filed claims with the railroad for lost business; a few are suing.
