Whatever they call it, Rosemount Estate from Australia has taken Shiraz/Syrah and run with it. Chief winemaker Philip Shaw was recently in San Francisco to formally introduce four new Shiraz and Shiraz-blend wines to press and trade. Rosemount now has seven Shiraz-based wines on the market in North America, covering all price-points from $8 to $35.

John Gay, president of U.S. operations for Rosemount, believes that Rosemount is the leading seller of the varietal in the U.S., with almost 200,000 cases sold in 1996. "It is, without question, the hottest red wine variety in America," ...
