Yucca Mountain. (evaluation as nuclear waste repository)

The US Department of Energy (DOE) is continuing its evaluation of Yucca Mountain, NV, as a possible repository for nuclear wastes. Evaluation results to date are positive and DOE is optimistic that it could present its findings to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission by 1999.

The major nuclear problem facing the United States is not radioactive waste but "nuclear rubbish" like that in the article "Overcoming Tunnel Vision: Redirecting the U.S. High-Level Nuclear Waste Program" in the April issue.
