Rafael Augusto Bordalo Pinheiro, one of the most famous and successful Portuguese ceramists in history, is virtually unknown in the United States. He was born in Lisbon into a family of distinguished artists. His father, Manuel Maria Bordalo Pinheiro (1815-1880), was a civil servant and prolific artist who produced an extraordinary number of paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, and even stage designs.
