QUESTION What is considered the earliest surviving joke? THE world's oldest joke book is called Philogelos (The Laughter Lover), a collection of 265 gags in Greek, put together in the 4th century AD by a pair of jokers called Hierocles and Philagrius.
Doctors, men with bad breath, eunuchs, barbers, men with hernias, bald men and shady fortune-tellers all come in for ridicule, and many of the jokes can still raise a smile today.
