SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I.--Oct. 4--Yesterday, the South County Sentinel changed its name to the South County Independent, giving ground in a battle with a rival newspaper over the right to use the name.

Meanwhile, it was announced that a popular cartoonist had joined the upstart Independent, leaving the staff of its established rival, the Narragansett Times, intensifying the rivalry.
