Marie de France exhibits an ambivalence toward authorship and the tradition in which she writes. This ambivalence is seen in the intertextual relations of the "Prologue" to her 'Lais,' the biblical Parable of the Talents evoked in the prologue, and the lai 'Deus amanz.' Marie seems to be aware of the necessity and danger of the gloss, that her texts become open to abuse and misinterpretation when she relinquishes them to the tradition.
