Sir John makes a return visit; Architect heads back to hall.

THE clock whirled back 280 years yesterday at a Northumbrian mansion. The colourful Sir John Vanbrugh returned to Seaton Delaval Hall to back the National Trust's bid to buy the 18th Century landmark and surrounding 450 acres.

Sir John was played by actor Ray Alexander, who is appearing as the architect at the Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering today and tomorrow.

Sir John designed Morpeth Town Hall in 1714, four years before he started work on Seaton Delaval Hall.
