1. INTRODUCTION

Ambient ozone pollution in urban areas represents one of the nation's most pervasive environmental problems. While the decreasing stratospheric ozone layer may lead to increased instances of skin cancer, high ambient ozone intensity has been shown to cause damage to the human respiratory system as well as to agricultural crops and trees (Lefohn and Runeckles 1987; Lippmann 1989).
