En 1910 el artista alemán Max Ernst (1891-1976) inició sus actividades como ilustrador con 25 dibujos para el Bierzeitung. Por ese tiempo (1911) junto con Franz Marc, Vassily Kandinsky y Paul Klee se opone a las ideas patrioteras que rechazaban las influencias extranjeras, sobre todo del arte francés.
