In February 2007 at the Basilica of Santa Sabina in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI presided over the Ash Wednesday mass, which is, for Catholics, a solemn occasion marking the beginning of the 40-day season of Lent. During the liturgy, a distinguished few worshipers out of hundreds in attendance were invited to approach Benedict in the basilica's sanctuary, and receive ashes from the pontiff himself.
