Jerusalem during the Hasmonean period was perceived as a Jewish city that evolved around the dimension of Hellenistic culture. Cultural integration was the main concept of hellenism, in contrast to the exclusivity of the Jewish dimension. However, this cultural reform in Jerusalem drew resistance from the Maccabees, who became subjects of persecution. The hellenization of Jerusalem was evident in its artwork, architecture, literature, fashion, currency, and social and religious practices.
