Slovenia has applied to join both The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the European union (EU) in order to maintain its independence and to further the integration of European countries. The Slovenian economy has been managed in similar way to economies in the West therefore it experienced recession and resulting economic decline in the early 1990s, in line with West European countries. Output in Slovenia has been growing since 1994 with the service sector increasing to 61% of the GDP. Slovenia became a nation state in Jun 1991 .
