The Czech Republic is an integral part of European civilisation. (European Union membership)

It is unlikely that the Czech Republic will be sufficiently prepared to become a full member of the European Union (EU) by the year 2000 but its stable political system and economic reforms should help it be one of the first Central European countries to qualify. It is important to admit the countries of Eastern and Central Europe into the EU, once they have achieved the criteria for membership. The Czech Republic government already meets some of the economic conditions set by the EU but needs to tackle the rising trade deficit and to increase foreign capital investment.
