Albright (1897-1983) produced startling portraits that often had corpse-like imagery. His extreme style often used multiple perspectives, color afterimages and contrasting sightlines. His final series of self-portraits was powerful and memorable.

Nearly 15 years after Ivan Albright's death, a retrospective, currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, permits a reevalation of this maverick artist's obsessively detailed, relentlessly morbid paintings.
