The rural electric industry can trace its roots back to the passage of the Tennessee Valley Authority Act in May 1933. This law required provision of affordable electricity to farms and small villages, and prioritization of 'cooperative organizations of citizens or farmers' and certain public agencies in the sale of surplus power. The rural electrification movement gained momentum, leading to the creation of the Rural Electrification Administration in 1935 and the passage of the Rural Electrification Act of 1936.
