The Eastern Orthodox Church has gained an established position in Poland despite a long history of religious conflict. The Eastern Orthodox Church has faced a long struggle as a minority religion within Poland, especially as one that was associated with Russian hegemony. The Polish church was established as an autocephalous church and was legally recognized by the state during the period of Polish independence, from 1919 to 1939. The position of the church during the war years from 1939 to 1945, under communism from 1945 to 1990, and in the post-communist period is also discussed.
