THE LOWER NORTH SHORE of the St. Lawrence River, Quebec, is a sparsely settled region remote from the rest of Canada (Fig. 1). The area comprises approximately 15 settlements scattered along 400 km of marine coastline (from Kegaska to Blanc Sablon), and it is inhabited by more than 6 000 individuals. Many individuals are fishing people, by occupation, who depend on wild-caught animals not only as a source of revenue but also of sustenance.
