The law amending the Criminal Code with regard to sentencing came into force during late 1996. The new forms of conditional sentence of emprisonment which may be imposed under this law present a challenge for institutions offering treatment for drug addiction because they may be compelled to take on more severely impaired clients. The overall goal of this study is to try to predict the actual repercussions of this law with regard to addicts.
