Near the ground, ozone is an air pollutant from man-made emissions. Ten to 30 miles overhead, it forms a protective layer that filters dangerous ultraviolet radiation from sunlight. Unlike its more common cousin oxygen (O[sub.2]), ozone (O[sub.3]) is a highly reactive gas of three oxygen atoms that occurs in only small amounts in our atmosphere.
