Theodor Herzl's "Altneuland" ("Old-New Land") may be analyzed as an example of Zionist fiction. Zionism can be seen as a balance between idealistic utopianism and a practical justification for the resettlement of Israel by Jews. "Altneuland" is a somewhat fantastic novel about two friends, an Austrian Jew and an American Jew, who visit Palestine at two points in time. It illustrates both the mythic aspect of Zionism and a scientific utopian approach to Zionism.
