MIAMI _ Planet Earth lost a friend and protector Wednesday. Jacques Cousteau is dead, his 60-year odyssey atop and within the world's seas at an end. He was 87.

His red wool cap a trademark, his French accent a delight, Cousteau's adventures _ and his passion for the oceans and everything they contained and embodied _ inspired countless millions.

``The future of civilization depends on water,'' Cousteau said in Orlando, Fla., this year as he picked up one of his many awards. ``I beg you all to understand this.''
