June 10, 1854--

James Augustine Healy, the first Black Catholic bishop in the U.S., was ordained a priest on this day. Born to a slave woman and an Irish immigrant who feared his children would one day be forced into slavery, James was sent North for an education when he was of school age. He enrolled in Sulpician seminary and was ordained a priest in Paris, France. In 1876, he became the first Black bishop in the U.S. appointed to Portland, Maine.
