Fifty years ago, Congress gave employers a powerful weapon, adding to an arsenal that companies have used against workers to this day.

On June 23, 1947, Congress passed the Taft-Hartley Act.

United Mine Workers leader John L. Lewis denounced it as ``the first ugly, savage thrust of fascism in America.'' Philip Murray of the CIO called it ``revolting to a citizen who believes in decency and in justice and in freedom.''

Industry leaders, who had written the anti-labor bill, celebrated. ...
