Introduction

In eukaryotes, DNA is packaged into a nucleoprotein structure, consisting of DNA, histones, and nonhistone proteins. This structure serves as the template for transcription and, thus, chromatin must be dynamic in nature to permit access of cellular machinery to the underlying DNA. Over 40 years ago, it was observed that transcriptionally active DNA was packaged with histones that were post-translationally acetylated on multiple lysines located within their amino termini (van Holde 1988) (Fig. 1).
