OXFORD - Just one year after American women were granted the right to vote in 1920, the first woman was elected to the Oxford School Committee. Though it would be 57 more years until a woman would become chairman, there has long been a major female influence on the board, which today has more women than men.

According to Town Clerk Lori A. Kelley, town reports noted "Emma Kilty appears to be the first woman elected to the School Committee." She served from 1921 to 1924.
