Conversion van sales fell in 1996 dropping by over 17% from 1995 to 101,965 units. The decline is attributed to consumers' increasing preference for converted pick-ups and sport utility vehicles. Sport-utility conversions, for instance, increased by about 60% from 1995 to 12,300 units. However, Recreation Vehicle Industry Assn. Chmn. Kelly Rose believes that the market will recover with sales rising between 125,000 and 130,000 units.
