Subsidy bill soars to record levels in 2008-09

New Delhi, Feb 16 (PTI) -- Electoral compulsions in a year when globally commodity prices touched an all-time high have pushed India's subsidy bill to a record Rs 1,29,243 crore this fiscal and will remain above the Rs 1,00,000 crore mark next year.

The Centre has revised the subsidy estimate for 2008-09 at Rs 1,29,243 crore, nearly a five-fold rise since Rs 26,838 crore in 2000-01. The subsidy for 2007-08 was Rs 70,926 crore.
