Since the 1980s, social scientists have used the term sexual coercion to refer to an interaction in which someone is pressured or forced to engage in a sexual act against her or his will. Numerous researchers have documented the widespread prevalence of sexual coercion and its many harmful effects and consequences in the United States. [See Craig (1990) and Koss et al.
