A BAD ECONOMY IN EUROPE and a squeeze in petrochemicals margins are blamed for a sharp drop in the operating profits of France's Elf Atochem. At a press conference in Nashville, Tenn., last week, president Jacques Puechal acknowledged the problems while predicting a better 1997.
Elf's new $135 million HFC-134a plant in western Kentucky, not far from Nashville, is scheduled to begin production at the end of April and was intended to play a part in Elf's earnings improvement.
