After Billy the Kid, Kit Carson remains the best-known New Mexican of the 19th century. While Billy was the personification of the classic Western outlaw, Kit had the reputation in his day as one of the good guys, a straight shooter.

A journalist in 1857 went so far as to describe Carson in these terms: "He is universally beloved, and a favorite with all classes, Indians included." At the time he wrote, the words were essentially true.

Another statement that has a similar ring was uttered by a Kansas man soon after Kit's death ...
