The medieval play 'The Annunciation' shows that Mary undergoes the prejudice and marginalization common in a sexist society. Proof of this is Joseph's long soliloquy on being wronged by so-called 'woman maners.' Mary is the only speaking female character in the play dominated by male characters which include God, Gabriel and Joseph. She is also portrayed as a body rather than person with the emphasis on her virginity.
