The success of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) depends, to a large degree, on the sexual competitiveness of the released, sterile insects. Thus, protocols that enhance this competitiveness will increase the effectiveness of SIT as smaller numbers of sterile insects may be needed to control incipient wild populations (thereby reducing programmatic costs).
