Two perspectives on tenure.

Tenure among college professors may be viewed as a protection to academic freedom or a shield of incompetence. It prevents faculty members from losing their jobs when they clash with administrators over teaching methods. It is also seen as the reward for long periods of hardships in the academic world. Equipping university teachers with a certain degree of immunity would allow them to make even the most difficult and unpopular declarations.
