Gustave Flaubert's masterpiece Madame Bovary has been compared to the great classics of world literature. (1) Flaubert himself acknowledges his debt to many precursors, including a Roman author, Petronius, who wrote his novel Satyricon under the reign of Nero (and who fell out of favor with the emperor, for which he paid with his life, in a long, elaborate, stylized suicide).
