Planetary astronomer Carl Sagan was also known as a gifted humanist, author, educator and skeptic. He achieved fame through the 1980 television series 'Cosmos' and a subsequent book with the same title which successfully taught the masses how to appreciate astronomy. His main research interests were the origin of life, the greenhouse effect on Venus, planetary atmospheres and extraterrestrial life and intelligence. Sagan died on Dec. 20, 1996 at the age of 62 due to a long bout with myelodisplasia.
