SAN JOSE, Calif. _ In their increasingly fruitful and fast-paced effort to manipulate the body's most complex functions, biotech researchers have created the first artificial human chromosomes _ the microscopic objects that carry genetic information defining who we are.

Individual genes are becoming more and more understood in the wake of a multibillion-dollar effort to map out the exact location and pattern of all 100,000 in humans. How those genes package themselves into 23 pairs of chromosomes and replicate has remained a big question mark.
