The treatment of algebra as merely a discipline involving the manipulation of symbols should be changed as the 21st century nears. Instead, it should be seen as a method of generalizing patterns that form part of daily activities. Teachers and other involved parties should push for the definition of the concept of 'algebraic reasoning' and how it is perceived in the elementary classroom.
