Friends, some of them former teammates, have reacted with disbelief, wondering why catcher Josh Bard would return to the Boston Red Sox.
Wasn't there enough humiliation the first time, a brief stay in 2006? Why be at the mercy of Tim Wakefield's knuckleball again and run the risk of another epidemic of passed balls? Why not play somewhere else, just about anywhere else, really? Why re-enter the lion's den?
