Visitors to the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City are invariably stopped in their tracks by the brooding presence of a weather vane in the form of an American Indian warrior [ILLUSTRATION FOR PL. I OMITTED]. Rendered in profile, with impassive but clearly defined features, the stylized figure conveys a sense of purpose and quiet dignity. Since its purchase by the museum in 1963 it has been widely recognized as a masterpiece of American folk art.
