The notion that the Romans were 'just like us' is true when Roman art is studied in the context of modern culture. For example, the painting,' Couple on Bed with Servant' signified status rather than eroticism because ancient Roman bedrooms were used to entertain guests. The mosaic, 'Bath Attendant,' showing a figure with an oversized phallus, depicted unbecomingness, a humorous trait believed to dispel the dreaded evil eye.
